Water Treatment

Water Filtration Plant

A water filtration plant removes suspended matter and selected contaminants through a sequence of physical, chemical or biological treatment stages chosen for the incoming water and its intended use.

  • Multistage filtration
  • Raw-water analysis
  • Skid or site-built systems
  • Water filtration plant with multiple pressure vessels and valves

    Why water filtration is required

Raw water may carry turbidity, sediment, colour, odour, microorganisms and dissolved constituents. The required treatment depends on the source, which may be groundwater, surface water, municipal supply or a process-water stream.

Commercial and industrial systems are configured around both average and peak flow so the filtration stages can provide the required service rate.

    Typical filtration stages

    • Screening or straining of coarse material
    • Coagulation and clarification where fine particles need to be grouped and settled
    • Pressure-sand or multimedia filtration
    • Activated-carbon filtration for selected taste, odour and organic concerns
    • Cartridge or bag filtration
    • Iron removal, softening or membrane treatment where the analysis requires it
    • Disinfection before storage or distribution where specified

    Industrial filtration arrangement

Industrial plants may use several filtration stages in series so each unit protects the next. Pumps, vessels, valves and instruments are arranged for normal service, backwashing, cleaning and maintenance.

The plant can be fabricated as a skid-mounted package or assembled on site depending on the required capacity and available space.

    Design inputs

    • Daily volume and peak flow
    • Available pressure and power
    • Backwash and reject-water route
    • Operator access and automation level
    • Consumable, media and maintenance requirements
