Healthcare Sewage Treatment

Hospital Sewage Treatment Plant

A hospital sewage treatment plant handles sanitary wastewater and suitable connected support streams through screening, biological treatment, solids separation and disinfection.

  • Hospital sewage
  • Biological treatment
  • Disinfection and monitoring
  • Compact sewage treatment unit installed beside a hospital building

    Hospital sewage sources

The sewage system can receive wastewater from patient areas, toilets, staff facilities, kitchens, laundries and cleaning operations. Laboratory or chemical streams that are not suitable for biological treatment should be identified and managed separately.

Flow can change with occupancy, shift patterns and cleaning schedules, so equalisation and peak-flow allowances are important.

    Treatment stages

    1. Screen incoming sewage and remove grit or coarse solids.
    2. Equalise the flow so downstream equipment receives a steadier load.
    3. Use primary settlement where the process requires it.
    4. Apply biological treatment to reduce the organic load.
    5. Separate biological solids through clarification or membranes.
    6. Filter and disinfect the treated water for the selected route.
    7. Thicken and manage the sludge produced by treatment.

    Biological technologies

    • Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)
    • Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
    • Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)
    • Submerged Aeration Fixed Film (SAFF)
    • Extended aeration

    Healthcare-site design considerations

    • Actual bed occupancy and water consumption
    • Kitchen and laundry loading
    • Isolation of unsuitable laboratory or chemical waste
    • Odour and noise control near occupied areas
    • Standby pumps and blowers
    • Safe chemical and sludge handling
    • Disinfection and treated-water storage
    • Sampling, records and access for maintenance

    Plant arrangement

The treatment plant may be constructed in civil tanks, packaged modules or a hybrid layout. Equipment is selected around available space, hydraulic levels, operating staff and the required level of automation.
