Water Reuse
Water Recycling Plant
A water recycling plant treats a used-water stream to a quality suitable for a defined reuse, reducing the demand for fresh water where non-potable recovery is appropriate.

Recycling starts with the intended use
The treatment level cannot be selected until the source water and the reuse application are known. Irrigation, cooling, washing and process reuse can require different solids, microbiological and dissolved-constituent limits.
Storage, delivery pressure and the separation of recycled-water piping from other supplies are part of the overall system, not just the treatment equipment.
Factors that shape the design
- Source and composition of the wastewater
- Average, peak and seasonal flow
- Required recycled-water quality
- Variation in the demand for reused water
- Available storage and distribution system
- Residuals, reject and sludge routes
- Space, power and operator resources
- Monitoring and disinfection requirements
Physical treatment
Screens, settlement, flotation and filtration remove coarse and suspended material. These stages protect downstream biological, membrane and disinfection equipment.
Chemical treatment
pH correction, coagulation, precipitation, adsorption and controlled disinfection may be used according to the contaminants and intended reuse.
Biological treatment
Aerobic or other biological processes reduce biodegradable organic matter. MBBR, SBR, SAFF, activated sludge and membrane bioreactor systems are among the treatment options used across the wastewater range.
Reuse categories described
- Landscape and horticultural irrigation
- Cooling and selected industrial utility uses
- Construction and wash-down applications
- Toilet flushing and other suitable building uses
- Process reuse after application-specific polishing
- Ground or surface discharge where that is the approved route
Polishing and reliability
Sand and carbon filtration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet treatment or other polishing stages can be combined when the reuse target requires them. The plant also needs storage management, standby planning and routine testing.
