Sewage Treatment
Sewage Treatment Plant
A sewage treatment plant removes physical, chemical and biological contaminants from domestic wastewater through a controlled sequence of screening, settlement and biological treatment.

Purpose of sewage treatment
Untreated sewage can affect surface water, groundwater, public health and the surrounding environment. Treatment separates solids, reduces the biodegradable load and prepares the water for the approved discharge or reuse route.
The supplied Pure Waters reference presents sewage-treatment systems from 5 KLD to 100 MLD, covering compact installations and larger treatment requirements.
Working process
- Screen incoming sewage to remove rags, plastics and other coarse material.
- Separate grit and settle heavier solids before biological treatment.
- Supply air and biological contact so microorganisms can break down dissolved and suspended organic matter.
- Separate biological solids from the treated water in a clarifier or membrane stage.
- Disinfect or polish the treated water where the intended discharge or reuse requires it.
- Collect, thicken and manage the separated sludge.
STP process options
- Extended aeration
- Submerged Aeration Fixed Film (SAFF)
- Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)
- Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)
- Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
- Fluidized Aerobic Bioreactor (FAB)
- Fixed Bed Biofilm Activated Sludge (FBAS)
- Biological filtration and oxygenated reactor processes
System configuration
The treatment technology is selected after reviewing flow, load, available area, inlet characteristics and treated-water requirements. Systems may be provided in civil, mechanical, packaged, containerised or non-containerised arrangements.
Clarifiers, biological media, aeration equipment and sludge-handling components are coordinated so the plant can be operated and maintained as one process.
Operational features listed for the range
- Compact footprint options
- Automatic control where specified
- Access for routine operation and maintenance
- Energy and aeration requirements considered during design
- Treatment stages selected around the actual wastewater load
- Options for treated-water reuse after suitable polishing
- Packaged and site-built configurations
